auCD was pleased to sponsor the National General Assembly of Local Government 2007 in Darwin. The theme for the conference was A Climate for Change and gave auCD the opportunity of informing councillors and council management how the Community Geographic Domain Name (CGDN) initiative has allowed every community the opportunity to license their unique geo-specific domain name to develop a community run website.

The value of the names was a talking point with the recent sale of perth.com, which reportedly went for around $200,000. This story enabled the delegates to understand the value of a domain name and the significance of the CGDNs being reserved. The delegates were also able to conceptualise how the initiative encourages an online 'community of communities', where best practice, ideas and resources can be shared and developed. With this network and its increasing publicity, Australian communities are not alone in trying to be heard in the ever increasing 'noise' and commerciality of the internet.
