About Us

.au Community Domains Pty Ltd, a not-for-profit company acting as trustee of the .au Community Domains Trust (auCD), was established by auDA (.au Domain Administration Ltd) to facilitate the development of Community Geographic Domain Names (CGDNs).

The aim of auCD is to provide support services to communities who want to register their geographic domain name for a community website  portal and process applications based on policy and guidelines for the purpose of preserving Australian geographic names for use by the relevant local community.

auDA is the not-for-profit body endorsed by the Federal Government as the policy authority and regulator of the .au domain name space.

auCD is funded from the proceeds of the commercial geographic domain names ballot held by auDA in 2005.

After extensive public consultations auDA, in 2004, decided to create a new second level domain in .au for each state and territory (wa.au, vic.au, nt.au, etc).  Names that can be registered in these 8 new second levels are limited to address localities in the relevant state/territory (subiaco.wa.au, carlton.vic.au, alicesprings.nt.au, etc).
